From war fields to ballet

Michaela DePrince started her life as rough as it could be. Born in Sierra Leone, war made her an orphan. As if it wasn’t enough, she used to be called a ‘devil’s child’ because of her skin condition causing depigmentation.

But the chance and talent fairies hadn’t forgotten about her… After the death of her parents, Michaela was adopted by an American family and moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She studied at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis school and then joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem. As if it wasn’t prestigious enough, she joined them as the youngest dancer in the company’s history.

Michaela, who is not only concerned with her own career, wishes to encourage other black ballerinas. With this in mind, she performed at the Women in the World 2015 Summit and posed nude in Times Square for a photobook.

Her career just took a magnificient turn: she was just promoted to soloist at the Dutch National Ballet. So, congratulations to this beautiful, talented and inspiring young woman.
